Getting into the Conwy River

Conwy_No.4.gif (31922 bytes)Entering Conwy is not generally difficult although it can be made so if the unfamiliar skipper insists !

A marked channel guides you between the sands on either side.

Going into the river you are with the direction of buoyage.

The Fairway Bouy is in position 53°17.96'N 003°55.49'W.

From here the road tunnels at Penmaen-bachPt seen from the channel (45375 bytes)Penmaen - Bach Point are normally visible .

Below them you will see the red can buoy marking the start of the channel  - perversely named No.2 - (steer 114°T).

Follow the channel - do not be tempted to cut corners - especially at No.6 buoy which marks The Scabs.  At this point it is advised to pass No.6 by approximately 20m then dogleg to port to about 030°T.  Turn to Starboard when approximately 10m from No.8 buoy and continue to follow the channel normally.

The channel ends with the Roundiing the Perch.jpg (47635 bytes)Perch Light, which you should keep 30m off.

If you are not familiar with the channel you are advised to only navigate the channel 2 hours +/- HW.

Minimum depth of water at LW Neaps is 1.8m.

Those more familiar with the area may be seen crossing over the sands to the North of the channel.  This reduces journey times when heading around the Great Orme, but do keep an eye on the depth and beware of the effects of any swell.
